Silent Stranger (9781596637443)

Who was this silent stranger? Starved, tortured and incapable of speaking, would he ever recover? Michelle Bowman leads a contented life, teaching in a one-room school on her parents' remote Wyoming ranch. But her world turns upside down one day when, on a field trip with her students, she discovers a "wild man" in the mountains. Starving, filthy, and utterly unable to communicate, he fears everyone. She manages to gain his trust but is shocked when, as she washes away the filth and dirt from his body, she discovers horrifying scars. The nature of these scars leads her to suspect that the mystery man was a victim of some kind of long-running torture.Michelle is then overwhelmed with questions. Who is this silent stranger? Where on earth did he come from? Who would abuse him like this and was he a victim of someone in her small, closed community? And so begins the long journey, for both of them, wherein Michele sets out to nurse her charge back to health and teach him to rejoin humanity. She calls him Philip because he has a way with horses and Philip means lover of horses.Michelle's life, as well as that of her family, will be turned upside-down while she solves the mysteries surrounding the bizarre story of the silent stranger.
